Persuasive conference presentations

Being able to give successful presentations in English at international conferences is vital in academia today. This workshop aims to build participants’ confidence and skills in giving coherent and persuasive conference presentations in English in front of international audiences.

After completing the workshop, participants should

  • Understand the key features of well-organized and engaging conference presentations.
  • Be able to identify strengths and areas for improvement in their preparation and/or delivery of conference presentations.
  • Have gained confidence in their ability to deliver persuasive conference presentations to international audiences.
  • Have knowledge of strategies for handling questions from the audience.

Content and format

The workshop is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the key elements of successful conference presentations, including rhetorical and linguistic strategies and techniques for preparing and delivering clear and compelling presentations in English. The second part offers participants the opportunity to deliver practice presentations and to handle questions from their peers at a mock conference.

The workshop includes short instructor presentations, group discussions, practical exercises, practice presentations, and peer and instructor feedback on participants’ presentations.

Participants will be asked to bring an outline for a 10-minute presentation to the first session and to finish preparing and rehearse their presentation prior to the second session.

The workshop is free and open to all faculty members at the Faculty of Arts.
For PhD students we offer the course Conference Presentations: Preparation and Delivery
